Nigeria’s leading firm, America International Insurance Company (AIICO Insurance PLC), recently donated 500 reusable facemasks to African Clean Up Initiative in helping members in rural communities in Lagos State to have access to free facemasks amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
African Clean Up Initiative on the 5th of May 2020 started an initiative tagged #MaskUpSlum, a project aimed at providing 5,000 free reusable facemasks to members in low income communities within the state in reducing the rapid spread of community transmission of the virus in the state.
Organisers of the project had earlier made an appeal to well meaning members of the public in the state to key in to the project by donating and contributing to the cause.
According to Alex Akhigbe, chief executive officer, African Cleanup Initiative, while appreciating delegates from AIICO insurance, “MaskupSlumProject” by African Cleanup Initiative was due to the inability of most communities to protect themselves from getting infected by the coronavirus.
“The project was necessitated by Covid-19 prevention guidelines released by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) and National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on Covid-19 which was in line with the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines as part of the measure for relaxing the lockdown.
“The support of many amazing individuals who have also made donations, stating that the donation from AIICO Insurance would go a long way in making sure more communities are resilient and able to prevent local transmission,” said Akhigbe.
The delegates from AIICO insurance PLC were elated to be part of the initiative adding that the firm is looking forward for more partnerships with African Cleanup Initiative communities and environment is cleaner, healthier and more progressive communities and environment.
Part of the delegates were Abimbola Shobanjo, head, Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability and Segun Olalundu, head, Marketing and Communications
