Climate Change Mitigation in Delta State

Climate change is a major challenge and the water in Delta state is already impacted giving rise to serious pollution says Mrs Felicia Adun, Permanent Secretary and Head Climate change Unit Ministry of Environment. Water pollution increases the burning of wood to boil water and this trend needs to be reversed. To achieve this, we need a robust water filtration model that provides the dual solution of providing clean portable water as well as help in reducing deforestation, she continued. This was at the Water Filter Program Workshop in Warri where the Climate change Unit of Delta state Ministry of Environment, TripleQuest, distributors of Hydraid Biosand Water Filter, R20 regions of climate change and Foundation for Patnership Initiative in the Niger Delta (PIND) have partnered to provide a world recognised high quality water filter technology to reduce diseases in poor/rural communities of the Niger Delta and to explore the generation of carbon credits from community based water filter projects which reduces greenhouse emissions by replacing the need to boil water by burning wood.

This is in line with Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, Governor of Delta state’s goal of a low carbon eonomy and a climate resilient state. Vice President of Administration at Cascade Engineering, Kenyatta Brame partners with TripleQuest alongside WindQuest Group explains that the trio provides essential needs to at-risk families in developing countries by bringing togther the resources and objectives of non-governmental organizations, corporations and other partners. They have also distributed the Hydraid Biosand Water Filter in over 35 developing countries.

He continued saying the Hydraid is composed of materials which can be sourced locally like underdrain gravel and separation gravel. There is also a biological layer protected by the water level. The Hydraid is best for non-chlorinated water sources, low medium turbidity and provides portable water for a family of 10 over a span of 30 years.

Also this project will create jobs for locals as the State Government plans to set up the Hydraid Biosand Water Filter Manufacturing Centre and distribution base in the Niger Delta preferably Delta State although this ultimately depends on the success of the pilot programme.

Installation of the Hydraid will commence in certain communities over coming weeks as agreed upon by the Climate Change Unit and PIND with support from R20 whose founder is Arnold Schwarznegger former Governor of California while the Vice Chair for Sub Saharan Africa is Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan.
