The role of a responsible and responsive government is to make life easy and meaningful for its citizenry, of which women are no exception.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bola Dapo-Thomas said this at the on-going COWLSO National Women’s Conference in Lagos, when she presented a paper titled “Government’s Support for women in challenging times.”
She said the Lagos State Government had been proactive as its development plan alligned and provided frameworks for the improvement of the quality of life of the people.
Dapo-Thomas stated that the Ministry, through skills acquisition, had mitigated the effects of poverty, frustration, aggression and criminal tendencies emanating from unemployment and poor economic situation.
Dapo-Thomas noted that gender-based violence had become a major issue reflecting the extent to which women’s rights were threatened.
The Permanent Secretary reiterated government’s commitment in supporting its citizens, especially women, through empowering them financially to contribute to food production.
Participants at the conference also urged the government to partner relevant ministries and stakeholders in tackling problems women faced in their endeavours.
