The United States Secretary of States, John Kerry, on Tuesday, explained how Nigeria can completely defeat the already degraded Boko Haram insurgents group.
Kerry, who is on a two-day visit to Nigeria said extremism can’t be defeated through repression or fear.
Speaking in Sokoto, the US Secretary of States, stressed that the battle against Boko Haram will only succeed if the reasons people join the militant group is addressed and if the government and its military gain people’s trust.
According to Kerry, “We also know that beating Boko Haram on the battlefield is only the beginning of what we must do.
“Building public trust in government also requires cooperation from the military and law enforcement. Extremism can’t be defeated through repression or fear.”
He emphasized that rather than stopping at military engagement, the federal government should channel its effort towards addressing issues that brought about the group.
