In a move to comply with the World Health Organisation (WHO) standards in healthcare service delivery, the federal government is to build about 10, 000 primary health centres across the country, in conjunction with development banks.

Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, had earlier during the outbreak of Lassa fever in Niger State, said the 10, 000 health facilities will form the bedrock of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government health agenda.

To that end, the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) said on last week at a stakeholders meeting in Abuja that government is set to ‎partner the private sector and development banks to build the health centres across the 9,422 political wards in the country.

The move, according to government, is geared towards reducing the burden of over stretched secondary and tertiary healthcare institutions.

NHIS Acting Executive Secretary, Femi Akingbade at the forum explained that the primary healthcare centres are expected to be the first point of call for cases relating to maternal-infant care, malaria, and other ailments needing first attention.
