MamaYe: Ensuring World-Class Health Care System in Nigeria

One thing that is not well known in developing nations is collection and interpretation of data to measure yardstick for development and to determine what is working and what is not working, which largely has been a major setback to the development of developing nations.

In today’s digital centric world, data collection and interpretation is a common factor that cannot be undermined to total viability of health system in any country of the world

Effective data management is panacea to creating efficient health system which comprises all activities relating to managing health data as a valuable resource that encompasses acquiring, entering, processing, coding, outputting, retrieving and storing of data gathered in the different areas of health care, and which also embraces the validation and control of data according to legal or professional requirements.


One of the states in Nigeria that have seen the importance of data collection and interpretation to improving health care system in the development of the state and to provide essential and quality services to the people in the state is Lagos State.

The state government in its effort to ensure modern health care system that can be compete with any other standard in any part of the world has launched a health score card on its performance on Health, budget, and maternal and newborn in the Lagos State.

The program that was executed under Lagos State Accountability Mechanism for Maternal and Newborn Health (LASAM), with support from MamaYe Nigeria, developed scorecards from data generated from the state healthcare facilities that are providing maternal and newborn healthcare services.

The scorecards also cover the entire health budget of Lagos State with CSOs, stakeholders, media, and community representatives in attendance.

Dr. Folashade Oludara, Director Family Health and Nutrition represented the Commission for Health, Dr. Jide Idris.

Oludara said that the state has an effective financial structure in place that ensure that our health system in the state is well adequate funded.

She explained that people should not see budget as what can be turned to fund to run the health system.

“Budget is just an estimate of provisions government want to provide in response to particular intervention for a year”.

She said that Lagos state government has gone ahead so many state in the country to ensure provision of adequate health care system with many plans to harness dividends of democracies which will allow mothers to have children healthy babies and to avoid early pregnancy among adolescent girls.

Also speaking on how the state has performed in the scorecard, the National Technical Advisor for MamaYe, Oko Idago said that there is room for improvement in the sections the health system is not doing fine.

He further explain that to ensure that mother and babies are safe during pregnancy, all hands must be on deck and  those in the community need to take action to ensure that people are aware of the services that are available at the health facilities so that they can utilize those services.

He also called on the government to ensure that there is improvement in the services they are providing and allocate resources to ensure that there is good service provision.

Idago revealed that the data that was used is not from MamaYe but from the state health system.

“It is Lagos state data that we used, and we used the state apparatus to get this data which involves government officials in carrying out the data”, he said.
