The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Paul Orhii, has stated that the agency has gained international rating as one of the top 20 medicine regulatory agencies in the world.

He said this was made possible because of the several achievements the agency has made in the fight against counterfeit drugs and unwholesome products in the country. Adding that, the agency was giving technical assistance towards the production of at least four United Nations lifesaving commodities for women and children (Chlorhexidibe Gel, Misoprostol, Amoxicillin DT, Zinc Sulphate).

Orhii, who made this known at the agency’s Common Technical Document (CTD) workshop in Lagos, said the agency was currently spearheading global efforts through the use of cutting edge technologies to fight counterfeiting.

The DG, who was represented by the agency’s Director, Registration and Regulatory Affairs, Dr. Monica Eimunjeze, said for the first time in the history of NAFDAC, the Agency has secured convictions of 12 counterfeiters, including a 14- year jail term of the makers of ‘My Picking Teething Mixture’ that killed 84 Nigerian children in 2008 and a three years jail term without the option of fine for the manufacturers of fake insecticide between 2009 to 2015.

He also stated that the agency has stepped up its enforcement and, as such, has become a global role model as Pharmacovigilance.
