The Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill, which seeks to eliminate discrimination against women was today, 15th of March 2016, rejected by the Nigerian Senate.
The aim of this Bill is to promote equality, women’s right and economic freedom for all women andto discourage gender discrimination and violence against women. This aim has however been defeated for the time being as the bill will not be read a second time at the Senate because a majority of the Senators voted against it.
This blow is coming less than one week after the International Women’s Day and at a time when the world is coming together to promote the Pledge For Parity. Nigerians on Twitter are not taking this action by the Senate lying low.
Below is a screenshot of the tweet by the Nigeria Senate revealing this information.
Nigerians expressed their shock about this. Find screenshots of tweets by Twitter users.
