One axiom that can never be taken away among the just inducted fellows of Nigerian Leadership Initiative last weekend at their induction program as an associate of NLI is the magnitude of ecstasy and elation they displayed at the program. There joy was indescribable and knew no bound as they were all excited to take on responsibility to contribute to the development of the country after they have gone through extensive four-day residential leadership training with the initiative.

Twice in a year, the Nigerian Leadership Initiative through its intention to create a growing, global network of credible, accomplished community-spirited Nigerian leaders, committed to taking responsibility for driving positive change in Nigeria and Nigerian communities gather young Nigerians who are emerging public and private sector leaders between the age of 25 to 35 years from different part of the world together and trained them on value based leadership capacity.

Describing the selection processes of the application into the future leaders seminars, the Executive Director of NLI, Mr. Yinka Oyinlola said that what they have done in the past four days is to bring together very accomplished young Nigerians to participate in the program where several sections were held on value based , character driven and leadership were taught.

Oyinlola stressed further that the seminar readings and discussion formats allow and encourage the participants to deeply reflect on themselves, the root of their values, what influences their styles of leadership and what changes to be made in leadership styles that will be for the greater good and some of the sessions sub topics include: The Good Society, The Nigerian History and Constitution, Challenge of Leadership, Community and Efficiency, Liberty and Equality and Nigeria, Governance and Values.

“It is not that we don’t have leaders in Nigeria but we need purposeful leaders, leaders who can say this is what we are doing and these are the means that we must deploy to achieve the aims for the development of Nigeria. We had several sessions of value, we talked about equality, efficiency, community, and we talked about leadership and values”

One of the participants in the seminar at the induction program, Eyitayo Ogunmola who is the Founder and the Project Team Lead of PM Hub Nigeria – a Project Management training, consulting and solution organization in Nigeria revealed that it is an opportunity for him to create the next work of taught.

“We diagnose the whole country, we started form where the country started from as a nation and we came up with recommendations of what we are going to do as young leaders before we get into government”, he said.

What he will do if has the privilege to become the president of the country, Ogunmola said one of the things he would do is to reuniting the nation and strengthen the institution.

“One of the reasons why the country has been like this is that we strengthen individual and abandon the institutions. I will strengthen the institutions. Over the years, Nigerians has been discouraged by our past and present leaders, we have leaders who think that corruption is not bad, they give award to themselves and pardon ex-convict. I will cut down expenditure and allow the young people believe in the government”

Also speaking at the induction program on what she learnt at the four-day seminar, Adamma Chukwuma, said that her eyes are now open to the political systems now.

According to her, “I used to think that political system in Nigeria is as cruel as it is always mentioned but with the NLI training, I have been made known to realize what the system is about”

Chukwuma said further that if has the privilege to be in government what she will majorly tackle is power and electricity.

“The first thing is to move towards development on how to create inclusive growth, not growth for the big industry but growth for every Nigerians which will be focused on power and agriculture. I will ensure these so the businesses can work and we must take advantages of multiple acres of arable lands in Nigeria, and I have a lot of people I can work with on this.

She also reiterates that she will surround herself with right set of leaders who have moral integrity and who are commitment in doing things in the right way.

“I will make it clear that people who go against the law must be punished”, she revealed.

Abdullai Mohammadu Salisu who is a graduate of Bio Chemistry never taught of being in government position before one can make impact in life. T

Salisu who is a social innovation in Bauchi State said that it is not a matter of becoming the president of the country before one can start making impact in the country.

According to him, “it is a matter of being relevant in our various communities and if peradventure, I become the president, I have a lot of people I can walk with but we must first think of how we can become relevant in our various communities”

The Executive Director of Channel Television, Mr. John Momoh who was a guest at the event urged the inductees to be relevant in any point of endeavor they find themselves.

Momoh described them as set of leaders the country have been waiting for because they are charged with positive set of leadership capacity and attitude that needed for national development.

“Leadership is the major problem the country is encountering with and what that means is that NLI must not relent in its effort contribute its own quota by ensuring that they produce young leaders who can drive this change for greatness. Going through the NLI courses in the retreat bring a lot of energy and that is what is going to happening with this group of people”, he mentioned.

The Future Leaders Seminar had its inaugural class in 2007 and to date, with support from FirstBank, there are currently over 300 NLI Associates in Nigeria and in the Diaspora. The Future Leaders Seminar was designed to define the mission of the Nigeria Leadership Initiative (NLI) by creating a growing, global network of credible, accomplished community-spirited Nigerian leaders, committed to taking responsibility for driving positive change in Nigeria and Nigerian communities.

All the 27 participants at the event were given certificate of induction for the program with the project to develop mobile application for the health sector in Lagos.
