In furtherance of its commitment to improving the quality of family planning service provision across Lagos State, NURHI carried out renovation of Family Planning Clinics in selected Primary Health Care Centres Agege, Oshodi-Isolo, and Alimosho LGAs. Others were selected from Primary Health Care facilities in Ejigbo, Isolo, Ikosi-Isheri, Aboyi-Ketu, Agbado-Okeodo, and Egbe-Idimu LCDAs. The Family Planning Clinics were commissioned August 1 through August 3rd 2016.
This initiative, known as 72-hour-makeover involves assessment of facilities and their readiness to provide Family Planning services, and identifying the gaps that need to be filled to provide effective services. Then NURHI intervenes by carrying out minor renovation of existing rooms or space in the facility and donating instruments, equipment and furniture. This they started on Friday and completed on Sunday with the expectation that workers of the facility who left an old look on Friday will see a new look on Monday. The facilities are more conducive to work in. Providers in the facilities are also trained and re-trained to update their knowledge and skill.
Speaking at the commissioning of the newly renovated Family Planning Clinic in Sango-Agege Primary Health Care Centre, the Head of Administration, Mrs. Kuforiji expressed satisfaction with NURHI’s efforts “I would like to thank NURHI for this inititiative, the 72-hour renovation of the Family Planning Clinic. We appreciate it and as you have made me an ambassador of NURHI, I’ll certainly be coming here to counsel our people on the need to go for family planning; the need to have the number of children we can conveniently cater for. The Chief Nursing Officer of Iyana-Ejigbo Primary Health Care Centre, Jenny J. Udoh conveyed her gratitude to NURHI for giving the family planning clinic a new look. She also gave kudos to Lagos State Primary Health Care Board for accepting the initiative.” We wanted a new look and we now have a new look….I still have to thank the Primary Health Care Board for accepting them to come. Our Sole Administrator was here with his entourage to commission the clinic”. “We will mobilize the people to come for Family Planning” Udoh said.
According to the Lagos State Team leader, Nigeria Urban Reproductive Health Initiative, Dr Edun Omasanjuwa, “the brain behind the project is to increase quality and access to Family Planning among women and men of reproductive age in Lagos State and in Nigeria as a whole so that we can increase our contraceptive prevalence rate from the current national level of 15% to 36%”. He further explained that the Local Governments NURHI is working with in Lagos were selected based on the population of women of reproductive age. “Our selection was based on the Local Government Areas with the highest population and highest population of women of reproductive age. We believe those are the people who should be priority on our list and those are the people who will need our interventions faster. On his message to the general public Dr Omasanjuwa said People need to be more aware of the benefits of Family Planning. “Research has shown that Family Planning saves lives and reduces maternal deaths by up to 40%. So if ten women were to die as a result of pregnancy, Family Planning can save three to four of those women”. He also enjoined religious leaders to embrace family planning as it is good for the entire society and not just women. The Ward Health Committee Chairperson of Sango Ward, Chief Mrs Fausat King commended NURHI for the initiative and encouraged mothers to come for Family Planning so as to space their children.
Since the initiation of NURHI project in Lagos, Dr Omasanjuwa testified that uptake of Family Planning had increased in the communities. “We have seen a surge in access to Family Planning and women are coming to the facilities to request for services”.
Expressing his appreciation during the commissioning of Family Planning Clinic in Oshodi Primary Health Care Centre, the Sole Administrator of Oshodi-Isolo LGA, Hon Taoheed Adedayo Taiwo said “ We thank you for your gesture. If other companies and multi-nationals can engage in community activities like this, it will go a long way. As touching the need to inform our people to embrace Family Planning we have embarked on mass enlightenment of our people on the need for proper Family Planning so we won’t have an explosive population”. I assure you that our women are well enlightened and they know the need to curtail excessive reproduction for the development of Oshodi-Isolo at large. We thank you and look forward to further cooperation on this kind of platform” Hon Taiwo said.
