Not less than 1,540 elderly and physically challenged in Ilaje and Eseodo Local Government areas of Ondo state have been empowered by the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC).

The financial empowerment took place recently at the Igbokoda headquarters of the Ilaje Local Government.

Each of the beneficiaries constituting mainly of elderly and the physically-challenged received a sum of N40,000.

Speaking at the distribution, the State Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko represented by the commissioner for Women Affairs Mrs Sinmi Odunmbaku said OSOPADEC had supported the elderly in different ways since 2008 when the support for elderly scheme started.

“Though times are hard, the government understands the vulnerability of people who are 70 years old and above. This class of people can no longer do any energy-sapping work”

“Though the scheme has suffered a setback due to the poor shape of the economy, and eventually it has recommenced,” he said.

The governor added that activities of the commission in the last one year included the flag-off of the multi-billion water project at Aboto.

OSOPADEC Chairman, Mr. Ogunyemi Johnson assured people who gathered at the event that the commission would deliver on all areas of the present administration in the state.
