Prisoners in Jigawa State had relief materials supplied to them by the Jigawa State Agency for Mass Education. The items supplied included literary materials like exercise books, pencils, sharpeners, chalks, rulers, and blackboards.
The materials were donated with the hopes that prisoners will be better prepared for a life after incarceration. This will be coupled with the skill acquisition programs provided in the prison.
The Comptroller of Prisons in Jigagwa State, Mr Abubakar Garba, during an interview with newsmen revealed that illiteracy and youth restiveness is the major cause of crimes and that the relief materials supplied will assist in reducing crimes in the state. He promised that the Prison service will make good use of the items so that its purpose is achieved.
This is a commendable effort by the Agency, however, seeing the state of the cells in Nigeria, do you think literary materials isn’t the most pressing of their needs?
