Soul music welcomes New Artist- Dtonemartins

Over the past years, the Nigerian music industry has witnessed a tremendous growth from once local artistes making impact both at home and on a global level. Nigerian artistes are gradually growing to become internationally recognized artists with their good music and collaboration with various international acts like Akon, Rick Ross, Drake, Snoop Dogg, Meek Mill and has thus won international awards in the process.The Nigerian Music industry has also produced the most internationally marketable piece of music with production quality rivaling that of the western world. Music videos are crisp and shot with the best technology. With the competition in the industry, Radio stations have to sift through large volume of music.

The industry has recorded its success in several genres ranging from Hip-Hop, R&B, Afro-Pop and Soul. It has also produced legends, talents who are gradually becoming internationally recognized artists with their collaboration with various international acts like Akon, Rick Ross, Drake, Snoop Dogg, Meek Mill and has thus won international awards in the process.

Soul music is one of the genres in Nigeria who has recorded its own success. Neo soul was coined by the former CEO of Motwon , Kedar Massenburg to market and describe an emerging kind of music which was a blend of Soul music and contemporary R&B, but distinguished by a less conventional sound from the regular Soul music and the contemporary R&B. Neo Soul music incorporates elements of other genres of music such as jazz, hip- hop and African music.

In Nigeria, Neo Soul music came to the fore with the release of ”Asha” the debut album of talented female singer and guitarist, Asa in 2007. The debut album won her several awards with her unique new sound that was uncommon in the Nigeria scene then.

Of such awards is the Prix CConstantin award in 2008, Hip-Hop music award and a nomination in the French Music Awards for Female Artist of the year.

Other Nigerian artistes who have been caught with the neo soul bug include the multi-intsrumentalist, Bez, Djinne, Omawunmi, runner up in MTN project fame 2007, Praiz, Former PSquare back up singer Waje, Kween and new sensation in the genre, DtoneMartins

The New Sensation in Soul Music- DtoneMartins

Singer and proponent of Afrique-soul, Dolapo Martins with a stage name “DtoneMartins” recently thrilled the audience at the Clique Africa September Hangout in Ikeja, Lagos, with his rendition of “All of me” by John Legend in Yoruba version and his own single “Sukun Ife”. Participants were completely stunned with his musical prowess and and use of the Yoruba language (one of the four official languages of Nigeria). The performer told the audience that his singles are currently on some music blogs in the country.

On why he left his former record label, DtoneMartins said, “the deal was not a favorable one. There are times record labels want me to do other genre of music but I refused because Soul music is what I love to do, and I strongly believe that I can make great impact with it.”

“Never has it occurred to me to change my genre of music because I believe so much in what I do,” he said.

He however advised that the music industry in Nigeria should be diversified in order to open more doors for upcoming artistes.
